I needed a windshield for my car, so I called around to junk
yards and found one at Drury Auto salvage that would fit my
car. I headed out there, about a 40 min drive ONE WAY and
waited for about three hours during which time my husband
had to help the worker take the windshield out of another
car. We weren't told that the price included my husbands participation
in the whole ordeal. The owner of the salvage yard came over
and helped his worker re-install the windshield. When they
finally got it installed in MY car, there were problems from
the get go.
First of all, the guy didn't put it in right, he left it higher
on the right side than on the left. Evidently he didn't get
it set in the frame right, but he told us that it would "settle"
as we drove the car. When we left the yard, the windshield
whistled like a toothless old man and it leaked when it rained.
Well it never "settled" and on the drive to town
two days later we saw that it was cracking at the top, where
he "claimed" it would "settle".
So we took the car back to the salvage yard and were told
that they wouldn't replace the windshield. The only thing
they could do for us was to put a small cut under the original
crack to TRY to prevent it from cracking further, we declined
this generous offer. Not two days after that, the windshield
had cracked all the way across from one side to the other.
So basically I paid good money to get screwed because now
I have to go buy another windshield.
At that same time that I went out there to tell them about
the windshield, I also went with the intent of purchasing
a radiator for my sisters car. That was an experience in itself.
Even after they refused to replace my windshield, I was still
willing to buy the radiator because it was for my sister,
she'd needed one bad and they were by far the cheapest around.
My husband was there when they took the radiator out, but
noticed as they got up to the front of the yard that it was
bent. Evidently the car that it had been in had bottomed out
badly and bent the radiator. The radiator itself didn't leak
as it was still plum full of solid anti-freeze when they pulled
it (isn't that in itself illegal? I thought ALL cars at yards
had to be drained of ANY type of vehicular fluids).
My husband thought that he would get some sort of discount
on the radiator since it was bent so badly, but when he mentioned
this to the man who pulled the radiator my husband was told
that he would have to talk to the owner who happened to be
coming at that moment. So, he asked the owner about a discount
and the owner responded sarcastically that he wanted $70.00,
after my husband had already paid $45.00. My husband could
tell the man was immediately angered by the suggestion, as
I could also tell from the mans demeanor, his body language.
His employee told the man that my husband had already paid
for it and asked him what he wanted him to do. The owner then
told my husband what a good deal he had but my husband felt
he was still taking a risk, especially with no warranty and
what we'd already been through regarding the windshield, plus
the radiator WAS bent badly and COULD have leaked eventually.
My husband turned and began to walk away when he told the
owner that he wouldn't be back. The owner, already angry,
told him to wait as he walked to the cash register where he
withdrew the money that my husband paid. He gave him the money
and took the radiator then threw it in the trash pile and
told him " I guess you won't be needing this then."
I'm glad that my family and I are aware of the way this man
runs his business. I don't care how desperate you are, please,
pay the few extra bucks and get warranties! Remember the age
old saying, if it's too good to be true, then it probably
is!
