The
1979 movie "The Tin Drum", Academy Award winner
for Best Foreign Film was recently seized in what can only
be called censorship. The film was based on the 1959 movie
by Gunter Grass. Despite the awards and recognition the 1979
version has gained, the recent recognition has been negative
to say the least. An Oklahoma judge has declared the file
obscene under Oklahoma law. The judge was acting upon complaints
lodged by an anti- pornography group. The law the judge used
was a law that forbids any depiction of a person under the
age of 18 having sex. The law also includes any actor who
PORTRAYS someone under the age of 18. "The Tin Drum"
-- which is rated "R" and is not sexually explicit
-- has a sex scene between two young characters.
Just hours
after the judges ruling came down, police were pounding down
the front door to Michael Camfields Oklahoma City home before
he'd even finished watching the movie. The police, who'd already
seized movies from 6 rental houses (which by the way is how
they obtained the knowledge that he had rented the movie AND
his home address) demanded the movie be turned over to them.
Ironically the movie, which shows a young boy's view of Nazi
Germany, is an indictment of fascism. Hummm .. does a hit
a little too close to home for that Oklahoma judge? |
