There
have been many emails floating around regarding an email tax,
I've gotten some of them myself. This one however, is a very
real possibility. A proposal contained in the UN's annual
"Human Development Report" issued in mid- July,
has included a proposal for a "bit tax" on email.
The UN claims that if they tax every 100 emails "JUST"
one penny it would raise upwards of $70 billion dollars which
could in turn be used to help provide Internet and phone systems
in poorer nations that can not afford to do so themselves.
No government body has the ability to tax the Internet as
of yet, so for now, this is a mere suggestion, (if you believe
that, I've got some ocean front property I'll sell y'all REAL
cheap!). So far, this bill hasn't been met with much enthusiasm,
but this is only the beginning. The UN ( along with other
government bodies) see the Internet as revenue that's being
passed by. It's only a matter of time before the government
pushes it's way in and demands what it will call it's "fair
share" of the Internet revenue.
