Government Waste & Fraud
Government Waste At An All Time High!
Twelve different government agencies enforce thirty five different food-safety laws and the GAO says that the responsibilities are so fragmented that tax payers are being fleeced - even hurt. Every year up to eighty cases of illnesses come from bad food at a cost of up to $37 billion. No big surprise there. For many years our government has enjoyed it's free spending habits without the same restraints that we, the tax payers, the ones they GET the money from, do not, nor will we ever, have. The GAO's high risk list seems to be agencies who seem unwilling or unable to change or solve the problems. The number of problem agencies on the GAO's list has nearly doubled since it's inception in 1990. In 1990, there were a total of fourteen agencies on the GAO's list to twenty six in 1999. Over that time period, eighteen programs were added, but only six were removed. Ten of these problem agencies have been on the list since it began over a decade ago. So where are we being fleeced? Let's take a look.

Management at the DOE (Department of Energy)
is so disjointed that radioactive tritium has leaked into ground water and that clean up of radioactive waste at the site where the leakage is occurring is twenty six months behind schedule and $200 million over budget!

Transportation Department
The GAO estimates that the FAA has wasted $1 1/2 million in it's seventeen year effort to modernize the air traffic control.

Department of Housing & Urban Development
Management waste is disposing of HUD single family housing inventory costing taxpayers over $1 million every day! The GAO has listed the entire agency on it's high risk list.

Department of Health and Human Services
Medicare - the IG at the Department of Health and Human Services found over $20 billion in improper payments in Medicare's Fee-For-Service Program. That represents 11% of the entire Fee-For-Service Program!

Food Stamps
Almost $1 billion a year is lost because of improper food stamp payments. The average American would be outraged to know that his or her tax dollars are paying for food stamps for prisoners, fugitive felons and people who are dead, not to mention the enormous amounts of illegal immigrants who flood the gates on a daily basis.

The IRS
The largest seed bed for fraud found in the IRS is the tax credit programs. The largest by far is the Earned Income Tax Credit Program. In 1995, the EIC program alone sustained $4.4 billion in over claims! This figure represents over 25% of the total claims of this program, that's right 25%!

The Social Security Administration Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
This program is supposed to provide cash benefits to the blind and the disabled children & adults. This program suffers from long standing abuse, mismanagement, & increasing overpayments to those who don't deserve them - $1 billion for fiscal year 1998 and about $3.3 billion cumulatively. These overpayments are going to convicted felons, prisoners, people who are in this country illegally but the most disturbing part of the SSI's overpayments are to individuals who claim for the program under false pretenses or problems that they caused themselves such as alcoholics and drug abuses. These people choose the road their lives were going to take, why should the tax payers pay for the drunk man down the street to sit at home and drink more? Why should the tax payers pay for the drug user to get high everyday? A disgusting misuse of our funds.
