Three
year old Amir Beeks was lured away from a public library
he was visiting with relatives only to be be sexually assaulted
and beaten with a baseball bat then dumped in a ditch.
This is an article you would think the perpetrator would
be a
sick man, perhaps in his twenties, maybe late teens. This
however, is not the case. This boy was murdered by an unnamed
10 year old boy.
Apparently,
witnesses at the library led police to the suspect after
Amir's body was found face down in a drainage ditch near
the library. Amir was raced to the hospital, but pronounced
dead.
The
ten year old boy was charged with murder, felony murder,
kidnapping, illegal weapons possession and aggravated sexual
assault. However, he can not be tried as an adult, which
means that the most he faces is a 20 year sentence just
for the murder charge.
What
makes this case so much worse is that this 10 year old boy
had previously been reported to the state
Division of Youth and Family Services by his neighbors
who feared the boy was being abusive. The Division of Youth
and Family Services has acknowledged that they have a case
file on the boy.
In
an all too familiar scenario, the boy's name is not being
released, because he's a minor. This scene reminds me too
much of Jon Venables, who was recently released from prison
and given a new identity after the brutal murder he helped
commit.
No
one ever really thought something like this could happen
here, in our country, but I think that in the back of our
minds we all knew it was just a matter of time. My question
is this ... where in the hell were this ten year old boys
parents? And how could they have, in ten short years, created
such a monster and NOT seen any signs? The neighbors saw
signs of trouble, why didn't the parents?
It
is my opinion that when you choose to become a parent, willingly
or otherwise, you are responsible for that child until
the day either you die, or the child dies. I firmly believe
that the parents should be held responsible in some manner,
they were responsible for him and they didn't do their
job.
Here's
a challenge for you, the next time you drive to the store,
or into town or wherever it is that you go, look around you.
How many children do you see walking around the streets
on their own with no parents around? And I'm not talking
about teenagers, take a really good look and you'll see
children as young as 8 and 9 wandering around unattended.
What does this say for our society? I remember a saying that
I heard once a long time ago, something to effect that it
takes a village to raise a child. No it does not, it takes
two loving parents. |
