Paul
realized what was going on when the police knocked on his
door. He was being arrested for battery against Karla,
spousal abuse. He knew that Karla had been taken to Saint
Cathrines General hospital after he beat her with a huge
mag flashlight. By this time, the DNA on his samples had
come in. They matched the samples taken from three of the
rape victims he had attacked, and now there was proof:
Paul Bernardo was The Scarobouro Rapist. The police began
survelliance on Paul immediately. He became obsessed with
winning Karla back. His friends tried calling Karla and
Paul confronted Dorothy in the parking lot of where she
worked. It was all futile, though, for Karla was hiding
out in her Aunt Patti and Uncle Calvin’s condo in
Brampton, Ontario.
Karla
was looking forward to a new life. She shopped, went to
Burger King, and began to go out socially to clubs to listen
to live music. She began to dress in spandex fitted dresses,
and big earrings with her blonde hair done just so. She
met a man in a bar one night with her Auntie Patti and
immediately they began kissing and groping each other.
She came bounding up to Patti, asking her if she could
go home with Jim that night. Patti looked at her niece.
There was something going on that made Patti wonder what
Karla was hiding from them. She was so lighthearted and
didn’t seem to care if Paul was punished for beating
her or not. Her bruises were faded and she was ready to
start all over again with a new man and a new life. It
had been one of the worst cases of spousal abuse the Emergency
Room doctors had ever seen and even if Karla was willing
to forgive and forget, the police were not. The photos
of Karla taken at the time, are beyond horrific and anyone
would assume that she was a battered spouse who badly needed
assistance and protection from a wife- beating psychopath.
Dorothy
Homolka got a call from the police. They wanted to talk
to Karla about Paul. Dorothy passed the message to her
They made it clear that Paul was the subject of the investigation.
She was not being charged with a crime and she was only
an investigative lead. She was nervous, and the police
told her they were getting ready to charge Paul in a series
of rapes. Karla was nonplussed until the detectives were
gone. Then she burst into tears. “Oh my God, they
know everything!” “What the hell is going on,
Karla!” Calvin yelled. He watched her sobbing and
became very suspicious. She hadn’t been very forthcoming
with the police and he was sure she was holding something
back. “Karla,” Patti looked at her niece sternly.”I
think you should tell us what’s going on.” Karla
sniffed. She wasn’t going to tell them anything that
would make herself look bad. But Paul, that was a different
story. |
