Karla
got a lawyer named George Walker. As she sat in his office
telling him that she knew the killer of Kristen and Leslie,
he was flabbergasted. He didn’t believe her at first,
she was so petite, blonde, and in her little girl voice,
it was hard to picture her as anything except a frightened
victim of a rapist and murderer. As she told her story,
Walker knew that she wanted total immunity from prosecution.
Karla only told him about Kristen and Leslie. She didn’t
mention Tammy’s death or the several other girls
they had drugged, raped and videotaped. The police had
been searching for the killer and had very little in the
evidence department. They mistakenly believed that Kristen
was abducted in a Camero and had been checking and rechecking
owners of that make and model of car, to no avail. The
police formed a task force that had processed hundreds
and hundreds of tips, but no one had any new information.
It is interesting to note that several people who actually
knew Paul had called the police, saying that they thought
he might be the Scarobourugh Rapist, and he had violent
tendencies. A x girlfriend, a former acquaintance and his
best friend’s brother all told the police that they
should investigate Paul. He was questioned at one point
during the rape investigation, and even gave spit, blood
and hair samples. But until Karla gave them the information
that Paul was involved in the killings of Leslie and Kristen,
they had no suspect and were at a loss.
Karla
knew she had a lot to lose. She greatly feared prison and
thought if she told the parts that made her look like a
compliant victim, she might just get out of this better
than she originally thought. Walker decided that it would
be a good move to have Karla hospitalized for a psychological
work up, after Karla’s “horrible victimization”.
Dr. Hans Arndt, admitted Karla in Northwestern General
Hospital in Toronto under the name “Carla Teale”.
She loved it. In her own mind, she was the victim of horrible
abuse. She wandered through the hospital halls in baby
doll lingerie and carried a teddy bear. Many people didn’t
believe she was the victim she was portraying, she exhibited
none of the symptoms of post traumatic stress syndrome.
She talked on the phone, painted her toenails pink, wore
a floppy velvet hat and listened to her Walkman. The other
thing Karla liked to do in the hospital was take drugs.
She took, sedatives, narcotics, Anti depressants in such
high quantities at one point she had a drug induced seizure.
She talked to a therapist about all the abuse she’d
endured at Paul’s hands.
The
Dr. put Karla under a form of sleep therapy, where for
48 hours, she would be medicated to sleep and awaken, rested
and feeling well enough to participate in therapy. She
didn’t want to admit her role in the death of her
little sister, and told the Dr. as much. He suggested writing
them a letter to tell them that she and Paul were responsible
for Tammy’s death. The Homolka family was not surprised.
They long suspected that Paul and Tammy were having sex
and he was giving Tammy money. They told Karla that all
was forgiven, she had been in fear of Paul and the horrible
things he could have done to them all. Karla and Lori linked
arms and smiled at each other. She was not even going to
be tried in that death, because it was revealed after her
plea deal. She got the additional two for Tammy, but no
charges were ever filed.
In
fact, when charges were filed against Karla, she only was
charged with two counts of manslaughter. By turning against
Paul, she made a nice cozy deal with the Crown and on May
14,1993 the charges were formally laid: 3 charges of manslaughter
and a total of 12 years for the killing of Leslie and Kristen.
She had to testify against Paul. He was being charged with
2 counts of first degree murder, 2 of forcible confinement
2 of kidnapping, 2 of sexual assault, and one count of
committing an indignity to a human body, namely the dismemberment
of Leslie Mahaffy.
Karla
played martyr to everyone to the extent that she could.
She was smart enough to play victim, but not many people
believed it. The videotapes were not seen until after the
plea deal and the Canadian government has refused to overturn
Karla’s plea, even though the deal itself states
that if Karla lies, misleads, or is otherwise judged to
be duplicitous, the deal could be overturned and she could
be retried. The videotapes were damning evidence and when
Paul had his trial, the tapes were played over and over.
Tapes of Karla masturbating, of Paul being fellated, of
Karla being digitally penetrated by an unknown hand, licking
her lips at the camera. During both trials, the videos
were shown and the spectators were beyond horrified with
one segment of Karla performing oral sex on her own sister
while the girl was menstruating. |
