| In
a twist of fate, the same day Karla and Paul were saying
their wedding vows at the church, there was a large disturbance
out at a popular fishing spot near Lake Gibson. A fisherman
and his son had discovered a box with what looked like a
human leg. A fire truck was passing by and was flagged down
by the growing crowd. The water levels in the lake sometimes
fell by four or five feet and the remains of Leslie Mahaffy
came to the surface. The crudely constructed boxes were washed
up and breaking open to reveal her limbless, headless, torso.
Paul
and Karla went on a Hawaiian honeymoon. She later called
it the honeymoon from hell, but at the time, she was smiling
for Paul’s ever present video camera and looked to
be enjoying herself enormously. When they returned to St.
Catharines, Dorothy and Karel caught them up on local news. “Oh
you guys missed a big deal…they found a body in Lake
Gibson,” she said. “Poor thing, all chopped
up and headless…” Paul and Karla shot horrific
looks at each other. “What?” Paul asked. “Oh,
it happened on your wedding day. You had other things on
your minds.” When they arrived home, Paul ran around
the house ranting and raving. “Kar, why didn’t
you tell me about the water level in the lake?” “I
didn’t know,” she whimpered. “We’re
going to get caught Paul!” He took her hands and
looked in her eyes. “No we won’t, we took precautions,
we’ll be okay.” Karla was petrified of Paul
and jail. She would do whatever she had to do to survive. |
