The Crime

All three boys had been bound, but not in the traditional fashion. They were bound from hand to foot, backwards and tied with shoelaces. Stevie, as he was called, had been badly beaten in the head and facial injuries. While trying to collect evidence, for some reason, the theory that they were bite marks were negated by the corner. He surmised that it was an imprint from a belt buckle or similar attire. This might make sense at first, when you look at a flat photo, one front view. In reality, the eye curves into a socket and a belt buckle wouldn’t do that. A mouth would, and did.

Michael Moore was also naked and had facial abrasions .His eyes were closed and his face looked as though he was asleep, no pain or suffering, although we know that had not been the case. Stevie was brutalized badly and molested. His injuries showed that he had fought back, brave young man, he fought for his life. Chris Byers lifeless body is a sight that will haunt me forever. The boys’ bikes were found up stream, pulled them out the water and set on a long and wide pipe. After more searching an officer found a long thick stick with children’s clothing wrapped tightly around them. Two more sticks were found, which the police thought to be markers of some Satanic kind. In reality they were evidence, powerful evidence, indeed, though hardly Satanic. There were the clothes from all three boys and small pair of black tennis shoes floating nearby. All three boys were friends that went to the same school and played together often. They were best friends most of their young lives and now, they were together at their death, down by the water. The creek was a local spot where the water level fluctuated to a small trickle or up to 4 feet deep. No one knew who had created such a savage crime but the local police knew who they could blame it on. The local weird kid who clamed to be a witch or some kind of a Satanist: Damien Echols. He and his two friends supposedly held black masses at a local deserted spot the kids called Stonehenge. There was an old concrete structure with occult symbols spray painted all over it. Rumor had it that during the ceremony blood was drunk, all got naked and a huge orgy ensued. Who knows if any of this is true? It is true that there is a deserted concrete building with all manner of graffiti such pentagrams, curses and used condoms.

A local woman of very poor judgment only knew one of the three: Jessie Miskelly. She called the police and told them that Jessie had heard talks of witchcraft in the area. She let him baby sit her kids occasionally, but she asked Jessie if he would introduce her to Damian. She thought that he was “hot” and wanted to meet him. Jessie said, sure, if that’s what you want to do, I’ll do it. Her name was Vicki Hutchinson and had a son named Aaron close to the age of the three murder victims and was officially questioned by the police on more that one occasion. Pretty much everything that Aaron said that day, and all the following questioning were lie upon lie upon lie. At one point Aaron had claimed that he and the boys had watched secret ceremonies in the woods where naked people would chant, rub blood on themselves and have sex with all who were there. None of this had ever happened and once young Aaron realized the attention he was getting by telling these stories, the more elaborate they got. His mother, tried to have Damian take her to a local esbat, a ceremony of Wicca. When she went to where they were to have the meeting, she supposedly became very offended by seeing, “naked people in black paint”, dancing around and chanting. She demanded to be driven home immediately. The fact is, Damian had no driver’s license, no car and there never was any ceremony. Her son Aaron was near the boys’ ages and began spinning elaborate tales of things he’d seen and done in the woods. In a police interview, he said he’d been at the crime scene that very day and had just managed to run fast enough to save his life the day the other boys were killed. All his lies became so twisted that police surmised that both Vickie and Aaron were looking for 15 minutes, and the police had wasted more than 15 minutes in the pursuit of justice.
