West Memphis Three: Part Two The
Devil’s Knot: Another Perspective |
|
| There
have been two books written on this case that I know of. The first
one was a paperback called, “The Blood of Innocents” by
a trio of writers, Guy Reel, Marc Perrusquia and Bartholomew Sullivan.
It is a typical gory paperback with a lot of speculative thoughts
and reports that were later proven to be false. The second book, titled
“Devil’s Knot” By Mara Leveritt is more in depth
and outlines many of the reported rumors and lies that have become
a sort of urban legend for the people who had to see the brutality
and falsehoods visited upon their hometown. It has a large listing
of statements made by people you might think would know better than
to fabricate testimony. For example, one woman named Victoria Hutchinson,
had told the police that she had attended an esbat, which is a Wiccan
ceremony in the woods where kids reportedly went to worship Satan,
do drugs and have orgies. She had asked Jessie to introduce her to
Damian. Later, in 1994 she told police that she had, on the day in
question, drunk a full fifth of Wild Turkey after breaking up with
her boyfriend. She awoke the next day in her front yard with no memory
of what had taken place the night before. Other confessions were to
follow. The parents of Melissa Byers had been told by her, before
her death, that Byers was cheating on her with a local woman and asked
her father to pick up her son from school on the day of the crime.
But on the day in question, Melissa’s father was headed off
at the pass by Byers himself. He told him he would pick up Chris and
for him to go on home. He did and later wished that he had picked
the child up himself. Melissa had also told her parents she was coming
to stay with them for a few days. They were relieved and told her
so plainly. When she didn’t show up, they called the Byers’
home and Mark told them Melissa wasn’t feeling well and she
was asleep. Later that night, they received a phone call from Mark.
“Melissa’s dead,” he said and the news was met with
confusion. ”Melissa’s what?” her father stammered.
“She’s dead,” Byers said flatly adding that the
police had seized her body so there was no reason for them to come
up there. There has been much speculation as to the nature of Melissa’s
death. It was true she was on drugs and Byers insisted she had died
of “a broken heart.” |
